Necropolis Boljuni, national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is notable for numerous inscriptions whereupon it is in the first place in our country. It is situated 15 km southwest from Stolac and 274 tombstones have been conserved in it, from which 92 are decorated and 19 with inscriptions, which confirm that the literacy and culture of this area in middle age has been highly developed.
Boljun inscriptions are short; in most cases they start with the cross sign and formulation a se leži (here lies). They contain a base biography data (name and surname of deceased, the name of those who put the tombstone and the name of tombstone’s constructor), they incurred in the middle of 15. and in the beginning of 16 century. They are written in Croatian language with the elements of Church Slavic literary language and with one of the three Croatian letters: Croatian Cyrillic script or Cyrilic-bosancica. The oldest inscription written in that letter is Humac Tablet. By its language and graphic marks Boljun tombstones are no different from those that are written at the same time in the area of West Herzegovina, for example. Viganj Milošević inscriptions (1404.) from Kočerin near Široki Brijeg. From language marks the most important is jata writing – there are many samples with ikavian reflex which confirms that in the time when Boljun epitaph are incurred, in this area the standard Croatian ikavian dialect were spoken.
Some more data about deceased, beside the name, among inscriptions in Boljun, we found on three tombstones: a se leži dobri junakь i čoek vlatko vuković, a se leži dobra vladikovka erina vukocamić, a se leži dobra žena stana đurenovica. (here lies good hero and man vlatko vuković, here lies good erina vukocamić, here lies good wife stana đurenovica.) The assumption is that the first tombstone applies on duke Vlatko Vuković from Kosaca family, which is mentioned in 1378 in the Bull of the King Tvrtko I. Kotromanić Dubrovnik.

Croatian post Ltd. Mostar has issued a commemorative postage stamp and a first-day cover.
