The snowdrop (Galanthus) is a genus of plants from the family Amaryllidaceae. It is called the herald of spring because they appear while snow is still on the ground. It has small flowers that are composed of six white petals. There are three outer petals which are long and curved. The inner petals are small and notched, and their tips are greenish and greenish-spotted. Thin green, sheath-like leaves wrap around the flower stalk. The fruit is a capsule containing seeds with characteristic elaiosomes (fatty seed structures) that attract ants to disperse them. (Željka Šaravanja)
